S0UNDB1TS is based on the demultiplexing of ADAT channels. A single ADAT connection has eight 24-bit audio channel making 8 x 24 (192) 1-bit channels.
The S0UNDB1TS hardware driving the piezo loudspeakers of the installation has been designed by Emmanuel Flety at IRCAM. It consists of a motherboard and four daughter boards per ADAT connection.
The mother board is connected to a standard ADAT sound card via an optical cable (TOS-link) and splits the eight ADAT channels into four digital 24-bit stereo signals that are transmitted to the four daughter boards.
The daughter boards further demultiplex each of the two incoming 24-bit audio channels into 24 1-bit signals that are directly connected to 48 loudspeakers.
The first S0UNDB1TS installation used three ADAT channels connected to three mother boards and a total of 12 daughter boards each wired to 48 loudspeakers making a total of 576 independent 1-bit audio channels.
